Boycott Twitter Spam
Jul 2nd, 2009 by Ron Knights

I’ve grown tired of all the mass postings by people who’ve entered various contests, etc.

I know some people or organizations have requested that people make multiple posts in order to qualify for winning a prize.

I don’t have the time or patience to look at all those multiple posts.

They’re almost as bad as the posts where someone tells us what they had to eat for lunch, or when they had a “bodily function.”

These multiple posts are another thing that have been known to overburden Twitter at times. Those are the times when we can’t access the service.

I think people should stop encouraging others to make multiple Twitter posts in order to win a prize or get a message across.

In the meantime I will choose not to see Twitter Spam.

I’m slowly getting things together with Windows 7 RC1 on my Beast PC. Windows Home Server says I’m running out of hard drive space.

A Good Windows Home Server Book
Jun 29th, 2009 by Ron Knights

I recently obtained the following book:

Windows Home Server: Protect and Simplify Your Digital Life, by Rick Hamilton.

I skimmed through the book because I’ve already been working with Windows Home Server for a few weeks.

From what I saw, this book is an excellent choice for someone who’s thinking of installing Windows Home Server, or someone who’s just begun.

The book covers many aspects of using Windows Home Server. That includes the considerations and strategy that you might want to adopt.

The book also covers sharing a printer, your multimedia library, etc.

I’d classify this book as Beginner or Early Intermediate Level.

If you’re already familiar with Windows Home Server, you’d want to look for a more advanced book.

PS: I looked at the instructions for sharing a printer.

While the instructions were very clear, I decided it might be better for me to consider buying a wireless network printer.

Seriously Testing Windows 7
Jun 29th, 2009 by Ron Knights

I’ve recently preordered 2 copies of Windows 7. They won’t arrive till after October 22.

I’ve been running Windows 7 RC1 on an old socket-939 computer (The Microfly computer).

That computer is only used for “multimedia.” (Watching my Hulu shows & Netflix online videos.)

The monitor is a 22″ LCD TV, in VGA mode. I’m not entirely satisfied with the resolution.

I finally decided to install Windows 7 RC1 on my quad-core Beast PC.

I had hesitated to make the change because the Beast PC is an off-the-shelf computer.

It worked, and I didn’t want to “jinx” it.

I finally admitted that the Beast PC hasn’t gotten any really “serious or hard” work since I got it.

That’s because the Macintosh is really my favorite computer.

I’d recently moved all my data over to the new Windows Home Server. I really had nothing to lose.

I installed Windows 7 RC1 onto the Beast PC last night.

Then I started installing the software I use the most.

In the past I’ve used Poser and DAZ|Studio (3D Art programs) the most.

These programs are the most likely to put any computer to the test.

These were the first programs I installed.

Next, I installed 38 GB of Poser content onto the Beast PC.

I’ve used Roxio’s Toast Titanium to backup my previous Poser content onto DVD’s.

Late last night, I used Roxio’s Restore utility to bring the Poser content over to the Beast PC.

If I were smart, I would have delayed the job until Monday.

The job took several hours. I needed to be around to swap DVDs till the job was done.

I went to bed at 4:30 AM. I finally woke at 1:30 PM.

It will be a very “foggy day” for me.

The job isn’t done yet. I need to run a utility to check all the file references, etc.

That job will take several hours.

Once that job is done, I’ll see what other software I want to install.

I may do a few videos and uStream shows using the Beast PC…

I want to test Windows 7 RC1 as much as possible.

I’d feel better about using the Beast PC for videos if I had the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000.

It’s on my Wish List.

I ordered both a download and “Packaged version.”
