Hard Drive Insanity Part Three
I’ve developed a strategy for backing up much of my important data.
I wanted to use Parallels Mac to install Snow Leopard. My friends said it could be done, but they were wrong.
I’m a writer and artist. I’ve been using programs like Poser since 1999. I started using DAZ Studio by DAZ3D when it was first introduced. I go back and forth between DAZ Studio and Poser. Here is DAZ’s link. Here is the Poser link.
Poser has had many different owners in recent years. DAZ3D has been a major supplier of Poser content since its beginnings in 1999. Over recent years, DAZ3D has bought many 3D art software titles. Here is a link of their offerings.
I’ve noticed that DAZ3D has fallen behind on their support for Macintosh computers. First, the oldest product installers wouldn’t work because Apple no longer supported the “classic emulation.” Apple abandoned support for Rosetta, and that disabled most of DAZ3D’s product installers. I contacted DAZ3D directly, and received absolutely no assurances that the problems would be fixed.
Thanks for responding. I share your pain.
I’ve had the same frustrations with DAZ! Is there any other affordable 3D software like DAZ that is actually fully compatible with Mac (especially Lion OS) ?
I’m about to fire up my old Mac just to work on Carrara 6 Pro for some occasional 3D work. If there was a Lion-compatible version with decent reviews, I might shell out more money. I too have followed strange set of software updates over the past 15 years, and it’s too bad they seem to have dead-ended. Is it finally time to buy a “real” Mac 3D application? I’ve always been slowed down by the cost and fear of the learning curve… Have you taken the leap to a new product?
I take pride in being a Non Conformist. I mostly avoid the directions of the faceless mobs, the trends, etc. Like thousands of other loyal Apple users, I had to get the most recent Apple updates the same day they arrived. These updates were indeed agonizing.
I started out using Software Update on my Mac Mini, which I had recently turned into my Primary Macintosh computer. Oh my God, a 6-hour download?! I abandoned the update for awhile and worked on a video project. I started having anxiety attacks about the editing project, and returned to the Apple upgrade experience.
This time I decided to go directly to the Apple Support Downloads site to get the updates. Here is the link. I think it was more efficient to download directly from this site because I could save the files, and use them on the second Macintosh computer. But then I realized my Mac Mini’s wi-fi connection was abysmally slow. I’ve covered that story in this blog post. I started using the iMac for downloads.
Many of my friends and relatives recall how my desk collapsed, and my 24″ iMac hit the floor face-first. I consider it a miracle that the iMac survived with no apparent outright physical damage. The screen wasn’t even scratched. Internally I wasn’t so fortunate. The internal hard drive doesn’t work. The DVD burner is possibly gone as well.
The iMac still functions when it boots off an external USB drive. Many people are amazed that it works at all. I have to imagine the iMac isn’t terribly efficient, running off an external USB drive. I decided it was time to make the Mac Mini my primary Macintosh, a year after I bought it.
I haven’t made the wisest decisions recently. I can say it’s due to my recent depression. I can say I bought some stuff I always wanted. That much is true.
My first significant purchase was this wonderful 24″ LED monitor by Viewsonic for $190. Here is the link.
I do a lot of graphics and video work. I absolutely needed a second monitor for one of my Macintosh computers. I absolutely wanted and needed a large monitor to replace the 25″ monitor that died last year.
I remember some of the silly and expensive things I wanted to do in order to make better YouTube videos, live shows, etc.
I agree completely. Carrara has been utter frustration for me for years. Not ONE single version, or update to a version as worked as would be expected. Buttons don’t work, primitives act strangely, shaders disappear or change on an object, or just plain crashes. It goes on and on. I was so disappointed in version 8 that I got a refund. It’s disgraceful the way they treat the Mac platform. WIth a million or so a month being sold, you’d think they’d wake up and smell the roses. No such luck, I’m afraid. These people can’t seem to make a stable product. I can only imagine what it must me like on a PC.
